TOPIC: Create A Moon Society SCHOOL:

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: As the 10th grade capstone experience, students will create a moon society that incorporates learning from core curricular areas. The project will culminate in a recruitment fair where students will convince stakeholders to join their colony.
ESSENTIAL QUESTION:    

How do you establish and maintain a colony on the moon?

SUB-QUESTION:  How do environments that greatly differ from the earth influence a culture’s writing and communicating? SUB-QUESTIONAs population increases, how can you be sure you have enough resources to meet the growing population’s needs?

 

SUB-QUESTION:  How will we provide for our biological needs while being good stewards of the moon?

 

SUB-QUESTION:  How will we govern ourselves on the moon?

 

SUB-QUESTION: How will we build our colony on the moon?

 

 

 

 

STUDENT PERFORMANCES:

  • Students will create a newspaper or website using electronic media that includes:
    1. Expository Writing
    2. Response to Literature
    3. Narrative Writing

 

 

STUDENT PERFORMANCES:

  • Students will analyze a mathematical model of human population growth.
  • Students will predict how population growth will impact their initial and future resources.

 

 

STUDENT PERFORMANCES:

  • Students will create a sustainable system that provides for, food, gas exchange, sanitation and medical needs while dealing effectively with good stewardship of the land. (Ecology)

 

 

STUDENT PERFORMANCES:

  • Students will create a Constitution for the Moon colony, which includes a plan for the colony’s economic, legal, and political systems, a colonists’ bill of rights, and methods of social control.
  • Students will create a 60 second video synthesizing all their learning with the purpose of creating a advertisement for their colony.
STUDENT PERFORMANCES:

  • Meeting the engineering requirements imposed by moon conditions, students will design and create a physical and a digital model of their sustainable system.
  • Students will create a lunar rover and a sphere sorter, using VEX robotics materials, to perform mining tasks.
